Biography
Jason Goetzinger, born 1975 in Daajing Giids, Canada, is a multidisciplinary artist who has lived on the islands of Haida Gwaii his entire life and now lives in the village of HlGaagilda (Skidegate) where he has practiced painting, drawing, sculpture and jewelry since 1995. He works in a wide range of mediums including acrylic and oil on canvas, ink, charcoal and dry pastel on paper, wood, stone, bone, and found objects in his sculpture and precious metals in his jewelry.
Jason added painting to his practice after attending The Victoria College of Art in Victoria, Canada (2006-2007) where he studied art history, painting, drawing and 2-D design. Since that time, painting has been the main focus of his practice where he strives for truth and authenticity in his work.
Goetzinger’s main approach to his artistic practice involves processing his observations of the human experience. Using his emotions as a compass to guide the direction of his work, he employs drawing and colour as meditative tools to extract information from the depths of his subconscious mind resulting in a visual diary of thought and emotion. These drawings are the backbone of his artistic practice and influence the final outcomes of his large-scale paintings.
His diverse work ranges in styles from abstraction to representational illustration, with a wide array of subject matter including colour, line, form, surface and spatial relationships but has also been known to cover more complex topics such as human psychology and its impact on our natural world, socio-political issues and human relationships.
